# 1 What is Flash Rust, Rust Back, and Rust Bloom?

I, Lydia Frenzel, Ph.D., have been talking on this subject since 1985. John Kelly, International Paint, in May 1996 published “There’s More than One Kind of Rust” in Marine Log (Page 18).  You should read this article.  It is simple and direct.

Rust Back and Flash Rust are terms that appear in SSPC, NACE, and ISO standards.

Rust Bloom is a general term used in the corrosion and coatings industry.

These are the definitions in the SSPC or NACE or ASTM Glossary.

Flash Rust: (1) An oxidation product that forms as a wetted carbon steel substrate dries;
(2) Appearance of rust spots on the surface of newly-applied water-borne film during the drying phase.  This is different than Rust Back.
Rust Bloom (from NACE/ASTM Glossary): discoloration indicating the beginning of rusting.
Rust-Back (rerusting) is rusting that occurs when freshly exposed, dry, bare steel is exposed to conditions of high humidity, moisture, or a corrosive atmosphere. It is the term used when steel cleaned by dry abrasive blasting, power tools, or wet abrasive blasting begins to rust after the steel surface has completely dried.
Flash Rust often looks like Rust Bloom. Rust-Back could look like Rust Bloom.
NO RUST BACK is allowed in dry abrasive blast cleaning, even under conditions of high humidity.
Flash Rust often is allowed in waterjet cleaning, pressure washing, or wet abrasive blast cleaning methods. The coatings manufacturer has control over the acceptance of Flash Rust for that particular application.
